Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is your program?

Treatment at Newgate 180 is unique in that we offer a two-part, fully inclusive program that is one year in length.

Part one of the program includes four weeks (30 days) of intensive residential (live-in) treatment at our centre located in Merrickville, ON.

Part two is 11 months of continuing care to provide additional support after discharge.

Where are you located?

We are located in beautiful Merrickville, Ontario, just a short drive from the GTA, Ottawa, Quebec and New York State. We are happy to help you make arrangements to get to our centre, no matter your location. To view our facilities, please click here.

How much does the program cost?

Newgate 180 is a non-profit charitable organization, and our fee reflects the cost of operations.

Our program is $18,000 CAD payable in full upon admission. As we are a registered charity, there are no taxes and never any additional fees. The cost of the program includes the following:

  • Assessment and personalized treatment planning
  • Group counselling (2-3 times per day)
  • 3 to 4 individual counselling sessions per week
  • Medical assessment
  • Individualized fitness program
  • Nutrition education
  • Chef-prepared daily meals
  • Family Program (weekly sessions)
  • Educational and relapse-prevention presentations
  • Workplace involvement as appropriate
  • Wellness and recreational activities
  • Discharge/ongoing recovery plan
  • Introduction to Supportive Resources (e.g., AA/NA/CA, Smart Recovery)

What does the residential portion of the program consist of?

The four-week program includes individual and group counselling, personalized recovery planning, wellness and recreational activities (yoga, art, fitness, meditation, etc.) and a strong focus on relapse prevention. We believe it is imperative to help clients deal with the underlining issues that lead to their substance use. Clients learn about values, self-esteem, communication, responsibility, grief and anger.

Programming runs six days a week. There are no group sessions on Sundays, as it is a time for reflection, family visits and individual sessions.

What is continuing care?

The goal of the continuing care program is to provide additional support to clients following the residential program and to intervene quickly if there is a problem (struggling, relapse, risk of relapsing).

During the residential program, each client will work with a relapse prevention counsellor to create a personalized recovery plan. After completing the 30-day stay, the client and counsellor will have reoccurring scheduled meetings (typically by phone) to ensure they are implementing their recovery plan and to provide any support as needed.

I’m worried about a loved one, how can I get them help?

We understand the pain of watching a loved one fade away from an addiction.

If they are ready to receive help, we can work with you to arrange a screening and tour to begin the intake process. Through this, we can answer any questions they may have to help to ease anxiety about entering treatment without any commitment.

If you believe your loved one may be unwilling to consider treatment, or you’re unsure of how to approach the topic, an intervention may be helpful. We would be happy to provide referrals to professional interventionists we work closely with in Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa.

How soon can I start the program?

As a private program, we have no waitlist and are able to admit new clients typically in as little as a few days. To begin the program, we require 72 hours of sobriety and to have completed our intake process.

For individuals experiencing significant withdrawal symptoms, we can provide referrals to a detox centre convenient for them to receive care in a safe and supervised environment.

What is your intake process?

Our intake process is designed to ensure Newgate 180 is the best program for you.

The process begins with a screening with an experienced counsellor. During the screening, the counsellor will collect the background of the individual’s situation and needs. This is conducted with the potential client, generally over the phone, but can be completed in person if the client would like a tour prior to coming to Newgate.

After the screening is completed, and it is determined that our program matches the client’s needs, we will schedule an intake appointment at that time. During an intake, a full assessment will be completed and any accompanying family members will be given information about our family program. Admission can then be completed.

Our number one priority is that you get the help you need. If at any time it is decided that our program is not the right fit, we will happily provide you with other options which may be better suited to your needs.
