What are Amphetamines?

Amphetamine is a class of drugs that includes amphetamine, methamphetamine (“meth” or “speed”) and dextroamphetamine. These drugs speed up the central nervous system and typically produce feelings of energy and euphoria.

Some drugs within this class are legal and may be prescribed to treat conditions such as ADHD and narcolepsy. However, if misused, all drugs within this class produce dangerous effects on the body and brain and have the potential to become addictive.

What Causes Amphetamine Addiction?

It is generally accepted that addiction to any substance, including amphetamine addiction, is not caused by a single factor, but rather by a combination of genetic and environmental influences.

People who tend to be vulnerable to developing a problem with amphetamine use are those whose lifestyle demands sustained energy and alertness such as truckers, students, athletes and soldiers. Those with eating disorders may also be at increased risk due to the weight loss that often comes with amphetamine use.

The bottom line is if there are problems in your life – or your loved one’s life – due to the use of amphetamines, now is the time to seek amphetamine addiction treatment.

What Is Amphetamine Addiction?

If you are reading this, chances are that you or someone you care about has a problem with amphetamine dependence. Some of the common warning signs include:

  • Needing to use more than before to feel the effects.
  • Losing control over how much or how often you use.
  • Needing to use in order to meet the energy demands of your daily life.
  • Going on “runs” – taking the drug every few hours for up to several days, typically without eating or sleeping.
  • Experiencing anxiety, severe depression, fatigue, psychosis and intense cravings when you don’t use.
  • Spending too much money on amphetamines.
  • Isolating yourself from family and friends.

How Do I Know if I’m Addicted to Amphetamines?

Other possible signs of amphetamine addiction may include:

  • You have a poor appetite and have lost a lot of weight.
  • You are experiencing anxiety, excitability, irritability and may be prone to violent outbursts.
  • You are having trouble sleeping.
  • You feel a sense of confusion.
  • You have become secretive and have an increased need for privacy. You feel resentful and defensive when loved ones express concern about you.
  • You find yourself using amphetamines and driving or engaging in other risky behaviours (ex. sharing needles, unsafe sex etc.).
  • You may experience psychosis (ex. paranoia and hallucinations).
  • You develop severe dental problems (“meth mouth”).
  • You experience intense itchiness and scratching, leading to skin sores.
  • You are losing control and feel helpless and ashamed, and have no idea how you ended up in this downward spiral.

These are just some of the many signs that amphetamine use is becoming a problem in your life. If you find yourself feeling this way or are watching a loved one suffer, we can help. Contact our amphetamine addiction treatment center today.
