Why a Women’s-Specific Addiction Program?

We developed the Women’s Addiction Program because we operate on the belief that addiction treatment is not one-size-fits-all.

Societal pressures, caregiving expectations, relationships, mental health and trauma all impact women uniquely and we believe they need to be addressed as so through treatment. 

We also understand that many women in our program have past experiences and traumas and that they do not feel safe speaking about these experiences in front of men. The women’s program creates a safe space where women can feel supported, understood and safe discussing sensitive topics. We believe this is crucial for effective recovery.

What to Expect from our Women’s Addiction Program

Newgate 180 provides a unique and industry-leading modular approach to treatment. Developed through years of working with clients and listening to them and their stories, we understand the many complex issues that cause addiction and relapse.

Approximately 70% of our group program is delivered to men and women separately to allow clients the ability to comfortably express gender-specific experiences throughout groups. 

Throughout our women’s programming we work with clients on understanding women’s perspectives and impacts of addiction on body image, stigma, shame, risky behaviours and physical and mental health.

All women’s programming is delivered by our female clinical team. Our program fosters an environment where women can build meaningful connections among their peers in the program and can share their experiences without fear of judgment. 

In addition to our gender-specific programming, 30% of our group programs are co-ed. We believe including co-ed programming allows all clients to gain better understanding through various perspectives within a group therapy setting.

What Makes our Addiction Rehab Program for Women Different?

Many traditional rehab programs are not designed with women’s needs and experiences in mind. The Newgate 180 addiction rehab program for women was created by women to fill this gap, providing women with a safe space to begin their journey of recovery. 

From the opening of the Women’s Centre in 2011, to the relaunch of the addiction rehab program for women in 2024, including new groups and more single-gendered programming, our program is constantly evolving with new research and feedback from our clients to provide our clients with proven and effective addiction treatment.

Trauma Informed Recovery

Our program is trauma-informed, recognizing the pervasive impact of trauma on every aspect of a woman’s life. We understand that trauma affects individuals in profound and lasting ways, and we integrate this awareness into all areas of our programming. 

Many women develop maladaptive coping mechanisms, such as substance use, as a way to manage the effects of past trauma. At Newgate180, we believe it is essential for women to establish a solid foundation in recovery and develop healthy coping strategies before engaging in trauma work. If this “Pandora’s box” is opened too soon, clients often revert to old coping mechanisms, which only perpetuates the cycle of trauma.

Throughout our program, we support clients in building grounding techniques, coping skills and a strong support network, all of which are essential for accessing ongoing trauma therapy effectively. While Newgate 180 is not a trauma centre and does not focus on directly processing past trauma, we ensure our clients are equipped with the necessary tools and resilience to engage in trauma therapy when they are ready.

Our Facilities

The Women’s Centre is a women’s-only space designed to be non-institutional, where clients can feel safe, at home and comfortable during their stay. The intimate space aims to foster a sense of community and healing among clients.  

The Women’s Centre offers semi-private rooms, fitness equipment, outdoor space, art supplies, a group room, private therapy rooms and shared living space.
