Managing Addiction Triggers During the Holidays
While many people look forward to the holidays, for some in recovery, it can be the hardest time of the year. From family obligations, holiday get-togethers and financial stress, the holidays are full of potential triggers that can lead to relapse.
At Newgate 180, we understand the challenges you may be facing this month. In this blog, we’ve put together some strategies to help you stay focused on your recovery journey during the holiday season.
Plan Ahead
It’s important to think ahead and have a plan in place before an event, family or friend gathering or during the holiday season in general.

First, be self-aware and think about how to identify your triggers before they happen. Think about last holiday season, when were you thinking about using the most? What situations were you in when you used or were tempted to use?
Once you’ve identified your triggers, you can begin making a plan to manage them. For you, maybe that looks like:
- Talking with family before the holidays about how they can best support you
- Practicing coping techniques (for example, breathing or grounding exercises)
- Planning to limit your exposure to known triggers (for example, not attending a holiday party where you know there will be heavy drinking)
If you are a graduate of the Newgate 180 addiction treatment program, the next step is to review your personalized relapse prevention plan.
Stay Connected to Your Support Network
The holidays can often bring an extra burden of stress and even isolation. Whether it’s attending virtual or in-person meetings or checking in with your sponsor or relapse prevention counsellor, make sure to stay connected to your support system and have a safe space and person to turn to if things start to feel overwhelming.
Practice Self-Care
At Newgate 180, we always encourage our graduates to take some time for them! Whether it’s meditation, exercise or an activity that makes you feel centered and relaxed, build in some time in your month to do something that makes you feel good.
Create New Traditions
In recovery, the holidays can often feel like a reminder of old patterns. The holidays don’t have to be a time to suffer through, they can be a great time to create new traditions with family and friends. This could be as simple as a Christmas Day walk, a family game night or checking out a sober event with friends.
Don’t be afraid to try new things and find what will make the holidays feel special for you in sobriety.
Remember Your “Why”
Take some time to reflect on the reasons why you started your recovery journey, and how your life has changed since starting recovery. Whether it’s for your health, your future or overall well-being, stay positive, stay motivated and always remember to stay focused on your path to recovery..
